Good Friday: Conversation on the Cross

Good Friday: Conversation on the Cross

Speaker: Pastor Lee Cummings
Date: April 18, 2025

We gather at the foot of the Cross—not just to witness the sacrifice, but to listen. In the final moments of Jesus’ life, the Gospels record powerful conversations—with the Father, with soldiers, with loved ones, and with the criminals beside Him. Each one reveals deep truths about forgiveness, grace, and redemption.

Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on this sermon:

Day 1: The Scandal of the Cross

Reading: Isaiah 53:1–12

Devotional: The cross of Jesus Christ is a scandal to human wisdom. As we read Isaiah's prophecy, we're confronted with the paradox of a suffering servant who brings healing through His wounds. Today, reflect on the "ridiculous scandal of the message of the cross" as mentioned in the sermon. How does the idea of a King enthroned on a cross challenge your perceptions of power and salvation? Consider how God's ways often contradict human expectations, and pray for the humility to embrace the foolishness of the cross as the wisdom of God.

Day 2: Forgiveness at the Cross

Reading: Luke 23:32–43

Devotional: In His darkest hour, Jesus uttered words of forgiveness: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." These words weren't just for those present at the crucifixion, but for all of us throughout history. Meditate on the weight of your own sin that Jesus bore, and the immensity of His forgiveness. How does this radical forgiveness challenge you to forgive others? Ask God to help you extend the same grace to those who have wronged you, remembering that we all stand in need of divine mercy.

Day 3: Conversations at the Cross

Reading: John 19:25–27

Devotional: Even in His suffering, Jesus showed deep care for others, especially His mother. His conversation with John and Mary reveals His humanity and divine love. Today, consider the "Marys" in your life—those who might be overlooked, lonely, or in need of care. How can you, like John, respond to Jesus' call to care for others? Pray for opportunities to extend Christ's love to those around you, particularly those who might be easily forgotten.

Day 4: The Thief's Repentance

Reading: Luke 23:39–43

Devotional: The story of the repentant thief demonstrates the power of last-minute salvation and the boundless mercy of God. Reflect on Jesus' promise: "Today you will be with me in paradise." This account reminds us that it's never too late to turn to Christ, but it also challenges us not to presume upon God's grace. How does this story impact your understanding of salvation? Pray for those you know who haven't yet turned to Christ, and examine your own heart to see where you need to surrender to God.

Day 5: The Speaking Blood

Reading: Hebrews 12:18–24

Devotional: The sermon mentioned that Jesus' blood "speaks a better word" than the blood of Abel. While Abel's blood cried out for vengeance, Christ's blood speaks of forgiveness and reconciliation. As you read today's passage, consider the power of Christ's sacrifice. His blood continues to "speak" today, offering cleansing, restoration, and new life to all who believe. How does the reality of Christ's speaking blood impact your daily life? Thank God for the ongoing efficacy of Christ's sacrifice, and ask Him to help you live in the freedom and power it provides.
