In this sermon from Pastor Dane Mallernee, we explore the call to abandon our old selves and embrace the new life given to us through Jesus. There's a pathway to experiencing the most profound joy available to the human heart: walking as children of the light, shedding the old self, and putting on the new self.
Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on this sermon:
Day 1: Putting Off the Old Self
Reading: Ephesians 4:17-24
Devotional: Paul's words in Ephesians remind us that as believers, we have a new identity in Christ. We are called to "put off" our old selves and "put on" the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. This transformation isn't just about behavior modification; it's about a fundamental change in our identity and nature. Reflect on areas of your life where you still cling to old patterns or mindsets. How can you actively engage with the truth of your new identity in Christ? Ask God to reveal areas where you need to "put off" old ways and embrace your new self in Him.
Day 2: Walking in Love
Reading: Ephesians 5:1-2, John 15:9-11
Devotional: As imitators of God, we are called to walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us. This love isn't just a feeling; it's a sacrificial way of living that reflects God's character. Jesus tells us that when we abide in His love and keep His commandments, our joy will be full. Consider how you can practically demonstrate Christ's love in your relationships today. How might obedience to God's commands lead to greater joy in your life? Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with His love and empower you to walk in a way that honors God.
Day 3: Living as Children of Light
Reading: Ephesians 5:8-14
Devotional: Paul reminds us that we were once darkness, but now we are light in the Lord. As children of light, we're called to live in a way that exposes the fruitless deeds of darkness and reflects God's goodness. This isn't about perfection but about allowing God's light to shine through us in a dark world. Reflect on areas of your life where you might be compromising with darkness. How can you more fully embrace your identity as a child of light? Ask God to help you discern what is pleasing to Him and to give you the courage to stand for truth and righteousness.
Day 4: Being Filled with the Spirit
Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20
Devotional: Instead of being controlled by worldly influences, we're called to be filled with the Spirit. This filling leads to a life characterized by worship, thanksgiving, and mutual submission. It's not a one-time event but a continual yielding to God's presence and power in our lives. Consider the things that tend to "fill" or control your thoughts and actions. How can you create more space for the Holy Spirit to fill and guide you? Practice intentional gratitude today, thanking God for His presence and work in your life.
Day 5: Building on the Rock
Reading: Matthew 7:24-27
Devotional: Jesus teaches that the wise person not only hears His words but puts them into practice. This obedience creates a foundation that can withstand life's storms. It's not enough to simply know God's truth; we must apply it to our lives. Reflect on areas where you've been hearing God's Word but struggling to obey. What practical steps can you take to align your actions with God's truth? Ask God for the strength and wisdom to be a "doer" of the Word, building your life on the solid foundation of Christ.
