3 Minute Church: I Will
This blog unpacks Pastor Tim Matthews’ Sermon from December 8, 2024
Jesus is the greatest promise the Father has ever made and will ever make to us.
LET'S BREAK IT DOWN:
There's something profoundly comforting about a promise that never fails. Where people may fall short, and life may prove unreliable in its promises, there’s one truth that has stood the test of time: God is faithful, and His promises are unshakable.
As we enter the Christmas season, the story of Mary, a young woman from Nazareth, represents this truth. Imagine the shock she must have felt when the angel Gabriel appeared to her with a life-changing message: She was to become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God.
This wasn't just any ordinary pregnancy announcement; it was a divine proclamation that would change the course of history.
What's special about this encounter isn’t just the weight of the message but Mary's response. Despite her initial confusion and questioning, she ultimately responds with humble acceptance: "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your word." While it’s possible the whole world might deem her pregnancy impossible and scandalous, she embraces God’s will.
This story reminds us that when God's will feels restrictive or limiting, it's always for His glory and our ultimate good. Sometimes, God's plans are far beyond what we could ask or imagine. As Paul writes in Ephesians 3:20-21, God "is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think."
But here's the beautiful part: we're not just spectators in God's grand plan. We have the incredible privilege of participating in His work. As believers, we've been given the ministry of reconciliation. God has not only saved us through Christ but entrusted us with the message of salvation to share with others. What an honor and responsibility!
This truth should ignite a fire within us. We're not just living for ourselves; we're part of something much bigger. Our lives can be a testament to God's faithfulness and love. Every day presents new opportunities to witness to the greatness of our God, both through our words and our actions.
Consider these powerful "I will" statements from God:
"I will establish my covenant with you." (to Noah)
"I will make you a great nation and bless you." (to Abraham)
"I will give you rest from all your enemies." (to David)
"I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts." (the new covenant)
"I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh." (through the prophet Joel)
These proclamations remind us that our God is not passive or reactive. He is actively working out His purposes in the world and in our lives.
And the greatest promise of all? Jesus Christ himself.
So how should we respond to a God who is always faithful to His promises?
1. Believe: Let's put our faith not in our own abilities or even in the strength of our faith but in the One who is eternally faithful. Even faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains when it's placed in an all-powerful God.
2. Worship: May our lives be a continual song of praise to the One who gave His life for us. We were created to worship God; when we do, our souls find their true purpose and deepest satisfaction.
3. Witness: Let's share the good news of God's faithfulness with those around us. In a world hungry for hope, we have the privilege of sharing the source of true joy and peace: Jesus
When we reflect on the loss, letdown, or promises broken throughout our lives, we're reminded that our success is guaranteed when we live for His praise. Why? Because we know how the story ends. One day, people from every tribe, tongue, and nation will worship around God's throne. His praise will not be denied.
How will we live out our wholehearted “yes”?
Will we, like Mary, say "yes" to God's will, even when it seems impossible or uncomfortable?
Will we trust that His plans for us are good, even when we can't see the full picture?
God isn't looking for perfectly prepared people; He's looking for willing vessels. He's searching for those who will trust Him enough to say, "Whatever You want, Lord, I'm in."
In a world where man’s promise may fail, we can rest in this unchanging truth: our God is faithful, and His promises never fail.
And God never made a promise that was too good to be true.
Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on this sermon:
Day 1: God's Faithfulness and Promises
Reading: Luke 1:26-38
Devotional: God's faithfulness is a cornerstone of our faith. In the story of Mary, we see how God's promises come to fruition in unexpected ways. Just as Mary was chosen to bear the Savior, God has a unique purpose for each of us. Reflect on how God has been faithful in your life, even in surprising ways. Are there areas where you're struggling to trust God's promises? Remember, as Gabriel said, "Nothing will be impossible with God." Today, choose to say "yes" to God's will, even if it seems daunting or unclear.
Day 2: The Power of Worship
Reading: Psalm 100
Devotional: Worship is more than just singing; it's a lifestyle of joyful service to God. The psalmist encourages us to "make a joyful noise" and "serve the Lord with gladness." In what areas of your life can you infuse more joy and gladness as you serve God? Remember, our worship magnifies God - not by making Him bigger, but by declaring His greatness. Today, practice spontaneous moments of praise, whether through song, prayer or simply acknowledging God's goodness in your daily activities.
Day 3: New Creation in Christ
Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
Devotional: In Christ, we are made new. This isn't just about improvement; it's about transformation. Reflect on how your life has changed since knowing Christ. What old patterns or beliefs still need to be surrendered? As new creations, we're also given the ministry of reconciliation. How can you be an ambassador for Christ in your sphere of influence today? Remember, this isn't about your own strength but about allowing God's power to work through you.
Day 4: The Holy Spirit's Empowerment
Reading: Acts 1:8, John 14:15-17
Devotional: Just as the Holy Spirit empowered Mary to bear Jesus and later empowered the disciples at Pentecost, He empowers us today. We're not meant to live the Christian life in our own strength. Where in your life do you need the Holy Spirit's power? It might be in witnessing to others, overcoming a personal struggle, or simply in daily obedience. Today, consciously invite the Holy Spirit to fill you and guide your actions.
Day 5: Living for God's Glory
Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:31, Colossians 3:17
Devotional: Our ultimate purpose is to bring glory to God. This means living in a way that reflects His character and points others to Him. Consider your daily routines and interactions - how can they become opportunities to glorify God? Remember, when we live for God's praise, our success is guaranteed because His praise will not be denied. Today, choose one area of your life - work, relationships, personal time - and intentionally seek to glorify God in it.
