SEEK: The Horn of Hunger
SEEK: The Horn of Hunger
Speaker: Pastor Lee Cummings
Date: January 5, 2025
On night one of SEEK 2025, Pastor Lee Cummings delivers a powerful word on spiritual hunger. While the world views hunger as a weakness to be resolved, God desires an unwavering and never-ending hunger for Him. Pastor Lee references a cornucopia, which in traditional society is seen as a status of wealth and fulfillment. The cornucopia, while full, often leads to the "horn of hunger," which is spiritual emptiness. When our "horn of hunger" produces spiritual thirst, God fills it with His presence.
Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on this sermon:
Day 1: The Horn of Hunger
Reading: Psalm 42:1-2, Matthew 5:6
Devotional: Just as a deer pants for streams of water, our souls should long for God. The "horn of hunger" mentioned in the sermon represents our deep spiritual need that only God can satisfy. Today, reflect on your own spiritual hunger. Are you truly thirsting for God, or have you been filling yourself with lesser things? Remember, Jesus promised that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled. Ask God to stir up a holy hunger in your heart—a hunger that drives you to seek Him above all else.
Day 2: God's Invitation to Come
Reading: Isaiah 55:1-3, John 7:37-38
Devotional: God extends an open invitation to all who are thirsty—"Come!" He offers living water without cost. This echoes the sermon's emphasis on God's desire for us. Despite not needing us, God wants us. He longs for communion with His children. Today, imagine yourself responding to God's invitation. What might be holding you back from fully accepting His offer? Remember, Jesus stands ready to quench your deepest spiritual thirst. Come to Him with your emptiness, and allow Him to fill you with His presence.
Day 3: Hunger that Transforms
Reading: Acts 10:1-48
Devotional: Cornelius's story demonstrates how spiritual hunger can become a catalyst for transformation. His longing for God led to a divine encounter that not only changed his life but also opened the door for the gospel to spread to the Gentiles. Consider how your own hunger for God might be used to impact others. Are you allowing your spiritual appetite to drive you toward bold faith and obedience? Ask God to use your hunger as a key to unlock new doors of ministry and witness in your life.
Day 4: Satisfied in God Alone
Reading: Psalm 63:1-8, John 4:13-14
Devotional: David's words in Psalm 63 paint a vivid picture of a soul satisfied in God alone. Similarly, Jesus promised the Samaritan woman water that would forever quench her thirst. The sermon emphasized that true satisfaction comes only through communion with the eternal God. Reflect on the things you've been turning to for fulfillment. Have they truly satisfied, or left you wanting more? Today, make a conscious effort to turn to God as your source of satisfaction. Praise Him for being the only One who can truly fill your "horn" with lasting joy and peace.
Day 5: Hunger in the Midst of Suffering
Reading: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, Romans 8:18-25
Devotional: The sermon touched on experiencing spiritual hunger even in difficult seasons. Paul's "thorn in the flesh" and his perspective on present sufferings remind us that our deepest needs are met in Christ, even when circumstances are challenging. In times of trial, our spiritual hunger can actually intensify, driving us closer to God. If you're in a season of struggle, don't suppress your spiritual appetite. Instead, let it propel you toward deeper dependence on God. Thank Him that He is sufficient in your weakness and that He uses even our hardships to increase our hunger for Him.
